Our website has been online since 1999. During this time it has developed continuously. A few comments plus screenshots shall illustrate this development.
The internent finally makes it onto the tv. Microsoft brings out a successor to Internet Explorer named Edge.
Blechtrottel brodaktschns becomes blechtrottel.net. The site switches to HTML5, design and content get a slight makeover.
Development of both Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer continues. Apple's Safari manages to cross over to Windows and Google Chrome is the new kid on the block. The internet becomes mobile, social media are everywhere, yet both are hardly ever used intelligently. Data security falls prey in the course of events, but nobody seems to care. HTML5 and CSS 3 appear. As they make including multimedia content easier, browsers support them well. Streaming of content replaces filesharing; e-books become more popular.
Design changes at blechtrottel brodaktschns are subtle. Our tools and plugins for editor phase 5 come under their own heading. Much energy goes into our web projects, one of them, breitwieserschani.at, is our second own website.
Microsoft makes things happen: IE 7 appears. Mozilla publishes Firefox 2.0. AJAX and Web 2.0 are topics of the day, as far as this goes. HTML 4.01 is seven years old and heaven knows what a generally accepted successor might look like. CSS 3 is in the works but browsers still have problems with CSS 2. RSS at least has made it onto most of the important websites and gets supported by IE.
We get a very enticing offer that we cannot ignore: blechtrottel brodaktschns move to a different webspace provider and buy the domain blechtrottel.net. 2006 becomes a very creative year with new pages and many updates. For the first time we can monitor downloads properly in order to trim site content better to the needs of our visitors.
Obviously pushed by stronger competition Microsoft starts making allusions to the development of IE 7. Version 6 still rules about 90 per cent of the market, still there seems to be new impetus in the development. Whether this leads to an improved support of HTML and CSS, needs to be seen: At the moment no browser fully supports HTML 4.01 and CSS 2.
The number of pages on blechtrottel brodaktschns continues to grow. The navigation menu gets extended, its simplistic design disappears and all the sub-menus are reworked. News are made available via RSS.
WWWIE dominates the web, its development practically stops after version 6; its position is too dominating. Alternative browsers (Opera, Mozilla, Netscape) share about five per cent of the market. Apple users get Safari, a competitive browser. They all can handle a useable set of CSS rules by now. Towards the end of this period Mozilla Firefox brings some momentum into the browser market. For the first time in its history IE loses market shares.
After a long time of planning and testing blechtrottel brodaktschns switch to a design without tables. A navigation menu is added. The oldest browser technology supported is IE5. All pages are validated regularly and acessibility becomes an important topic. Every page is tested on eight browsers. New content is added. And after having been delayed again and again since 1999, the first English pages make their debut on blechtrottel brodaktschns.
WWWAt the beginning there are only two working browsers, i.e. Netscape 4 and Internet Explorer 4. Both use proprietary HTML tags and do not offer proper support for CSS, with IE being the less awkward choice. At the end of this first period in the history of blechtrottel brodaktschns Netscape has disappeared into oblivion due to a stop in development; Netscape 6 fails to recover ground. There is practically only one browser.
Like all sites of this time blechtrottel brodaktschns have to rely on tables in order to realize a minimum of typographic basics. From 2002 on CSS is implemented and full compatibility with Netscape 4 is gradually dropped in favour of better support of web standards.
